Cardboard LaternA little girl, barely seven years old, made her way one day to a farming town just outside the city limits. She was covered with dirt, dust, cuts and bruises from head to toe. Her hair was a long, thick, black matt of dirty curls. She had bright eyes, eyes of polished ebony wood. Yet, they were hungry, nervous eyes, darting from one thing to another, absorbing as much as they could in a glace. On her person, she worn a dress made from an old FedEx box and nothing else. It was tattered beyond reasonable repair and the dirt from the road cling to it with such vigor that you can barely make out the FedEx logo. In her right hand she dragged anothCardboard Latern


Commuter's Lament5:30 AM Phone alarm rings once, twice, three times. I'm up. At the desk, grab the offending phone and dismiss the alarm. Place phone next to head. Reset alarm. Fall back to a nightmare. 6:00 AM Phone rings. Stare at it. Think "Why is it ringing?" Suddenly remember you have a 9 AM class to get to. Grumble. Realize you know have an hour to get ready and out the door before WESTCAT JPX leaves and you have to wait until 8:30 before the next one gets there; by that time 3-5 different BART routes would have passed Downtown Berkeley.
